This beautifully shaped and painted Japanese toy is called usagi-no-mochiya. Usagi is rabbit and a mochiya is a person who makes rice cakes.
As you pull the toy with the cord the rabbit moves on its wheels and pounds the rice with a wooden stick.
Supposedly this toy was a favorite of Princess Aiko of the Japanese imperial family.
