Shogi is often called "Japanese chess" and is a popular board game in Japan. The name comes from "sho" as in "shogun" or general and "gi" meaning boardgame.
Unlike in western chess, captured pieces can be returned to the board and used against the opponent.
The board is made up of a grid of 9x9 squares and each player has 20 wedge-shaped pieces decorated with Japanese kanji (characters). The pieces in this set are plastic.
