In Japanese mythology, the legendary swordsman Benkei stood at Gojo Bridge in Kyoto where he disarmed all who attempted cross. At last, in his 1000th duel, he was defeated by Minamoto Yoshitsune, son of a great warlord. At that point Benkei became a retainer for Yoshitsune.
