The Shinsengumi were a feared armed nationalistic group in Kyoto in the 1860s, and are famous for their heroism, portrayed in numerous Japanese films and manga.
The kanji character on the back of the happi reads "makoto" - meaning sincerity, the motto of the Shinsengumi.
The three kanji characters on the front lapels spell Shinsengumi.
