Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine is the shrine located closessst to the Imperial Palace, in Tokyo, of any other shrine in Japan. Tenmangu shrines are dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, an eminent scholar, poet and politician during the Heian Period.

Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine offers two ema, one depicting Sugawara no Michizane himself and the other, a plum blossom, a flower which he is associated with through his poetry.
