At the end of a kagura performance comes the ‘Kirime’ dance. It is said that in mythical times in the town of Kirime in Wakayama prefecture, a great drum descended from heaven. Where it landed an angel appeared who, robes fluttering, beat on it. Suddenly peace and plenty reigned on earth. Since then it is believed that whoever watches the Kirime dance will be blessed with marital harmony and children. The beauty of harmony is represented by the sound of the flute that accompanied the drumming – and thus the 'Angel’s Robe' flute was born.
